When scientists join forces

The European Commission formally authorized the Western world’s first-ever approval for a stem-cell therapy that has been developed entirely by Italian scientists

Collaboration between scientists leads to excellent results for science and society. This is the argument of an article published in Nature. Starting from the famous Stamina’s debate, the authors analyze how the scientific community has moved to verify the scientific requirements, bringing the issue at the policy and legislation level.

A underestimate aspect of scientists life, but that shows how strong can be the influence of scientific community in issues that concern public health.

“The case Stamina has been a disgrace to Italy”, says Nature. But there are also good news: “The European Commission – authors conclude – formally authorized the Western world’s first-ever approval for a stem-cell therapy: a treatment for a rare type of blindness that has been  developed entirely by Italian scientists, working exclusively in Italy”. The news is also appeared on the EuroStemCell portal.
