UniStem Day 2020 – the event in Australia
On the 6th of March students from various schools had the chance to spend the day at different Australian Universities and Institutes.
Students who attended UniStem Day events heard from leading stem cell researchers and gained a deeper understanding about the ‘real science’ of stem cell research and what it holds for the future. Students enjoyed the opportunity to have their questions answered and experience a stem cell lab tour.
About participating Australian Universities and Institutes:
– The UniStem event held at the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Stem Cell Systems was attended by 90 students from 11 schools, both in the metro and rural areas. You can read about the Stem Cells @ UniMelb event here.
– The UniStem event at Monash University’s Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute was at full capacity.
– The UniStem event held at the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) at University of Wollongong had 20 registrations (on the day, 13 students plus their teachers). You can read more about the Stem Cells @ IHMRI event here.
Quotes about the day from teachers:
“A great professional development activity with further ideas of how to approach stem cell teaching and to highlight stem cells as a research tool.”
“This event gave students some ideas about what a career in science might be like, gave me some knowledge of new research occurring in the field to incorporate into lessons.”
“I really appreciate the opportunity to attend. I felt that this will be beneficial to the students both in their studies of biology, and potential future pathways. It also showed them that university staff are friendly and approachable.”
“It was an absolute privilege to be in the presence of cutting edge research. My students and I certainly enjoyed the day, finding out that such important scientific research is taking place at our local University and having a personal tour through the facilities. It was also very good timing, as the content was perfect for the student’s assessment task they are currently working on.”
