Microglia across the lifespan: from neurodevelopment to neurodegeneration

Microglia, the resident macrophages of the CNS, are play essential roles in brain development and homeostasis, and are strongly implicated in a wide range of neurological diseases. Genetic variants linked to neurodegeneration are highly enriched in microglia, highlighting their central implication in disease susceptibility. Here, we will discuss microglial functions during brain maturation and the importance of critical developmental windows, proposing that early postnatal microglial dysfunction may increase vulnerability to neurodegeneration later in life.
